2.2.6 No Smoking Policy |
Contents
1. Introduction
The Play and Youth services are committed to providing a safe working environment for children and staff. As part of the commitment the Playcentre recognises the right of all staff, children and young to work in a smoke free environment. All the premises within the confines of the Playcentre have been designated smoke free areas to ensure, as far as possible, that everyone is protected from the dangers of smoke.
Staff should also be aware that they are role models to the children that they care for and as such it is better for the children if they do not see adults smoking.
2. Legislation
The Health Act 2006 implements new rules regulating smoking at work in England with effect from 1 July 2007. The legislative changes mean that smoking will become illegal in certain wholly or substantially enclosed public places and it will become an offence to smoke in no smoking premises or to knowingly permit smoking in no smoking premises. Statutory fines will apply if this legislation is breached.
3. No Smoking Areas
All staff who wish to smoke are prohibited from doing so on the Playcentre grounds, including any car parks, thus reducing the chance of any child seeing a member of staff smoking.
Parents may not smoke in the Playcentre or its grounds either.
4. Signage
No smoking notices should be prominently displayed in the no smoking areas.
5. Responsibility and Enforcement
Compliance with the legislation and the Playcentre's policy should be managed by the Playcentre Management Committee and staff on duty. Staff should inform all visitors to the centre of the no smoking policy and ensure they comply with its requirements. Failure to conform to the requirements of this policy will constitute a disciplinary offence for staff and may result in formal action. Any visitor, parent or young person who refuses to comply with the requirements of this policy should be required to leave the playcentre premises.
